BIRATNAGAR: Amarlal Harijan and his wife Kaushila Devi’s eldest son Kamal, 23, daughter Sobita, 18, and youngest son Major, 17, of Mirchiyadangi, Mahadeva VDC in Morang are visually impaired.

“We are worried about kids’ upbringing,” Amarlal said. He bemoaned that they were having a tough time rearing their children. As if visual obstruction was not enough, Kamal has a hearing problem too. All these visually disabled people require assistance at all times. Only the second son of Harijans, Mukesh Kumar, has normal eyes.

Their mother Kaushila Devi said that they had taken their wards for treatment up to the Capital but it was to no avail after doctors declared that their :eyesight could not be regained.

To feed his family, Amarlal imports goods from Fulbadiya in India and sells them in Nepal. “Now, due to age, we are having difficulty working. Who will look after them?” Amarlal wonders.

He has asked for help to feed his visually impaired wards.

Community-based Rehabilitation Centre Coordinator in Morang Namra Kumar Mahato said his centre had deployed Dilip Singh, a teacher from Biratnagar Eye Hospital to help the physically challenged youth to walk. “Only a teacher, who will help to walk is not enough,” Mahato said.

The physically challenged brothers and sister dream of a good education and becoming good citizens. “If provided help, we too can be great people like others,” Major said.
