9th World Down Syndrome day celebrated

Kathmandu 24 March ,Down Syndrome Society Nepal also celebrated 9th World Down Syndrome day with various programs. March 21st is celebrated worldwide as World Down Syndrome Day. Down Syndrome also known as Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of 47 chromosomes instead of 46 chromosomes. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features, and mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Every child in 691 children is born with Down syndrome.


Program in Kathmandu started with a rally from Kapoordhara – Galkopakha -Thamel Peepal Bot – Amrit Science Campus – Social Welfare Council building. More than 150 people participated in the rally including individuals with Down syndrome aging from 7 years to 26 years, representatives from different organizations working on disability field, locals, friends and volunteers. A closing event was organized at Social Welfare Council post rally.
Chief Guest Mr. Purshottam Poudel, Youth and Sports Minister inaugurated the program and also released the poster by Down Syndrome Society Nepal marking 9th World Down Syndrome Day. The guests of the program include; Chairperson NFDN Sudarshan Subedi, Vice-Chairperson Social Welfare Council Pramod Mehta, Former Chairperson Nepal Doctors’ Association Dr. Kedar Narsingh K.C., Secretary Thamel Tourism Development Association Raju man Dangol, Chairperson Nepal Blind Cricket Association Major Pawan Ghimire and more. A dance was performed by Rasila Khadgi and Luja Shrestha, the children with Down syndrome.
Mr. Shanker Singh Chaisir, was honored for his consistent work in the field of disability through his TV program ‘Apangata Awaj’ addressing the issues related to physical and mental disability. Also, Token of Love was given to Pratyush Baral, Rajan Koirala, Dhan Gurung, Dhan Kumari Sunar and Umesh Manandhar.
“We should be the voice of the voiceless and power of the powerless” said Chief Guest Mr. Purshottam Poudel and also committed to raise the issues related to disability in the parliament. Mr. Poudel also committed to encourage youths with disability to be a part of sports.
Similarly, Secretary Thamel Tourism Development Association Mr. Raju Man Singh emphasized on practicing behavior to uplift the lives of people with disability every day starting from today. Dr. Kedar Narsingh K.C. also advocated the necessity of positive behavior towards people with disability.
Chairperson Down Syndrome Society Nepal and also the event Mrs. Shila Thapa expressed gratitude to all the supporters of the program including the youth volunteers. Mrs. Thapa also informed about “Miles for a Million Smiles” Marathon on 19th April.
